Don-B Motorcycle Apparel designs reflective clothing and accessories for motorcycle riders to improve visibility for both motorcyclists and automobile drivers. It offers fashionable gear to help reduce the number of collisions involving motorcycles that occur during poor visibility. Don-B features both classic and sport-bike styles for men and women who love to “stay up on 2.”

HOW MENTORING WILL HELP: “We want the 100 Urban Entrepreneurs mentoring program to equip us with knowledge we can feed into our dreams of running a successful company in the motorcycle industry,” Sheila Burroughs says. “Then we’ll be able to create our nonprofit and mentor the next generation of entrepreneurs determined to be global success stories.”

HOW $10,000 WILL HELP: We’ll purchase business insurance; build an awesome interactive Web site that displays great day and night pictures of models wearing our designs; boost our marketing and advertising; manufacture our initial inventory of T-shirt designs and new face mask; and attend prominent industry trade shows.

DONDI BURROUGHS, 46, has long loved to ride, but after a second collision with a motorist who didn’t see him on his motorcycle, he’d had enough. He began searching for fabric that would make him visible to cars even when he was riding at night. He and his wife, Sheila, 44, soon tracked down a patented technology, which led them to found Don-B Motorcycle Apparel.

The duo designed a few prototypes, honing their products through market surveys that helped them create stylish gear that didn’t compromise one iota of visibility. They’re currently focusing their attention on Urban Curve, a motorcycle fashion show they’ve developed — it will take place in Atlanta next August — that showcases the latest bike gear and also features educators working to increase awareness of breast cancer. As Sheila puts it, “We’re working to make people safe while staying in style.” •
