GoodieBox Bakeshop has a baked-goods retail store in Weehawken, New Jersey, and offers delivery to Manhattan and Hudson County, New Jersey. Specialties include six kinds of cake and 14 cupcake flavors, including Velvet Elvis (banana and peanut butter) and The OG (chocolate with chocolate frosting and sprinkles).
HOW MENTORING WILL HELP: “The main benefit from working with 100 Urban Entrepreneurs will be the guidance to help focus my thoughts and concepts to help execute and build on my business ideas,” Spindler says.
HOW $10,000 WILL HELP: “I started the business with just $7,000, so I can do a lot with modest amounts,” Spindler says. “The funding will go toward building a greater technology presence. I plan to build a Web site that will include e-commerce capability, feature cake and party themes, and include sources and innovative ideas to drive traffic to the blog.”

CARRIE SPINDLER’S STORY offers some tortuous twists and turns: Her comfortable financial-industry job imploded in the wake of the financial crisis; soul searching ensued. Tired of making decent money only to spend a ton of it on stuff she didn’t really need, she decided to turn her hobby — baking — into a business, opening it a year and a half ago in Weehawken, just across the Hudson River from Midtown Manhattan.
She’s very much a one-woman operation, and she offers a variety of delectable cakes, cupcakes and special-occasion treats. (Our personal favorite? The Peanut Buttercream Dream, which needs no additional explanation.)
When it comes to GoodieBox, one taste is all it takes. And her market is certainly promising: After all, she’s got 8 million hungry customers just a river’s width away. •
