HOW $10,000 WILL HELP: “We plan to build Stinky Cakes’ business with the funds provided by 100 Urban Entrepreneurs, increasing our marketing to our targeted demographic via radio and Internet advertising, and also using some of the funds to purchase inventory and supplies,” Mychal Connolly says.

ADRIENNE AND MYCHAL CONNOLLY, the “MomDadpreneurs” behind Stinky Cakes, have transformed their own needs into a viable business. The inspiration for Stinky Cakes came after the Connollys, expecting their first child, got no diapers from friends and family, who were apparently stigmatized by the idea of giving such a run-of-the-mill baby gift.

The Connollys are also passionate about giving back to their community. Adrienne — Stinky Cakes’ creative director, she was named one of StartupNation.com’s “200 Leading Moms in Business” in 2009 — is committed to reducing teen pregnancy; she has opened her home to teen foster children to help put them on a better path. Mychal — Stinky Cakes’ vice president of sales and marketing, and one of Business West magazine’s “Top 40 Under 40″ in 2009 — devotes his time to encouraging inner-city youths to put their minds and talents toward positive ends. •
